RESONATING MUSIC

Taylor Swift Records

Taylor Swift released her new album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, 2024.

The April 23 Variety headlined their article ‘Tortured Poets Department’ Breaks Record for Weekly Vinyl Sales in Just Three Days...

It feels potentially unlucky to talk about “breaking records” when the subject is actual LPs, but there’s no way around combining these terms when we’re talking Taylor Swift, the modern queen of vinyl. She has broken her own record for the most sales of a vinyl album in a week, and did it in just three days, with 700,000 LP copies sold of “The Tortured Poets Department” over the weekend. Variety, by Chris Willman, April 23, 2024.

A few weeks later Time magazine's "Health Matter's" article by Angela Haupt asked the question (based on the phenomenal anticipation and response to Swift's new album) "what is about Taylor Swift's music, in particular, that resonates so deeply?"

She noted that nueroscience research suggested that music "activates the brain's reward system, triggering the release of the nuero-transmitter dopamine."

Haupt then asked "a few psychologists who moonlight as Swifties" what they thought were the sources for that deep resonation.

Four explanations, with examples, were presented.

She sings about things we all experience.

She's vulnerable -- so are we too.

She makes girls and women feel seen.

She helps us feel connected.

Recorded music, of course, is the basis for the mass distribution of recorded sound which makes personal and repeated 'resonation' possible, anytime and anywhere.

Thomas Edison's Phonograph was the first device to record and play back the human voice and Taylor Swift's LPs are a continuum of that revolution of recorded sound.
